WOLFSCASTLE HOUNDS:-
“ Living The Dream”

As a child Kim had always hoped to one day own a Deerhound, he has now
realised that dream he has more than he wished for………………………………………….
We are a small family kennels, only breeding occasionally to keep our
lines in Deerhounds & Whippets true to their type & temperament.
We believe in breeding quality not quantity! We like our dogs to live
a full & active life doing what they were bred to do, running &
chasing. They live as a pack & all get on extremely well, nobody
has to be excluded. Obviously we do not let them run with the youngsters
too early, but generally they all muck in together & share our time
equally. The whippets do live in the house most of the time & they
are Zoe & Ebony’s duty. The Deerhounds tend to find it a bit
warm & constricting indoors but as they get older they do tend to
end up living in the house. They love visitors & all adore the postman
& he loves them, it takes a brave man to enter with all of them
in the yard, but none of them bark or act aggressively. We are proud
of their temperaments & as yet have no horror stories to tell (fingers
crossed!) People have often commented on how happy & friendly our
dogs are. We know how our pack works & each individual dog has his/her
own unique qualities & plays their role in the pack. They have their
Alpha Male & Female & their extended families, Kim is overall
the pack leader. He is a natural, I have never seen him act cruelly
towards the dogs, he is quiet & calm around them & they respect
him. (The sight of a grown man lying amongst his dogs all relaxing in
a heap in front of an open fire.) I on the other hand tend to bring
out the Loopy side of the dogs. It’s all a bit excitable lots
of kissing & cuddling every body vying for attention from mum, I
cannot sit on the sofa with out 4 Whippets draped over me, or a Deerhound
staring at me until they get up on there too!
We don’t tend to holiday much but we do get to travel around the
UK most of the year to show the dogs. We now work to keep them; we both
have our own businesses, which has been great but hard work. It helps
that we can run them from home, which allows us to spend more time with
the dogs.
They have truly taken over our lives, including our daughter Ebony;
she is more hooked on the showing than we are & is never here to
do the dirty work! Typical.
It is a 24/7 job, but so rewarding! All our hounds ask for is companionship
they are as at home in the show ring as they are out chasing in the
field. Not all our dogs excel in the show ring, but that does not mean
to say they will not make a great coursing dog. Maybe they have the
right idea; I would much rather a day out in the fresh air too. It is
up to us to bring out the true potential of each hound and nurture its
natural instincts.
I always said I would leave home if we reached a certain number, as
I do like to feel each hound gets as much attention as the next. We
have now passed that figure & I’m still here. 2 or 10 dogs
it’s not that different!
We have had a fantastic year in Deerhounds through 2007, winning TOP
SIRE, TOP PUPPY & WINNING LODGE PARK COURSING MEET. So it proves
with good teamwork & sticking to our game plan & morals you
can achieve great things. No dog should have to endure a unfulfilled
life to cater to our needs. Our dogs are pets first & the rest is
a bonus. We have also become Grandparents as Wolfscastle Wood Melick
has sired his first litter. His sister Wolfscastle Wild Orchid is also
hopefully going to produce us her 1st litter this year too.( We will
post up some photo’s soon).
That should keep us busy through 2008. We’ll keep you up dated!
